Understanding the Unique Language of Spirit

Understanding the Unique Language of Spirit

One of the most common questions I hear from clients and students is: “Do all mediums work the same?” And the answer is a resounding no—not even close.

Mediumship is as unique as a fingerprint. While all mediums have the ability to connect with the spirit world, how they receive, interpret, and deliver those messages can be incredibly different. It’s not about “right or wrong,” it’s about the individual channel and how Spirit chooses to work through them.

Let’s break it down.

Different Types of Mediums

There are several types of mediumship, and many mediums work with a blend of these. Here are a few common styles:

  • Mental Mediums: The most common type. Spirit communicates through the medium’s mind using thoughts, impressions, images, sounds, and feelings. The medium is fully conscious and aware.

  • Physical Mediums: Much rarer. Spirit communicates using physical phenomena—knocks, raps, direct voice, ectoplasm, or even materialization. This often happens in a trance or seance setting.

  • Trance Mediums: These mediums enter a deep meditative or altered state, allowing spirit to speak directly through them. Their voice, facial expressions, and even body posture may change.

  • Psychic Mediums: All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. Psychic mediums read energy from both the living and the spirit world. They often use tools like tarot, runes, or palmistry to enhance the reading.

How Spirit “Speaks” to Each Medium

Spirit doesn’t always communicate in words—it often comes through feelings, symbols, visions, sounds, or even just knowing. Here’s a peek into how varied that can be:

  • One medium may see a vision of a rose and know it symbolizes a grandmother.

  • Another might smell rose perfume and link it to the same spirit.

  • Someone else might feel the warmth of a grandmother’s love without seeing anything at all.

Some mediums hear spirit clearly in their mind’s ear (clairaudience), others feel spirit in their body (clairsentience), and some just know things instantly without explanation (claircognizance).

Imagine five artists painting the same tree: each will capture it through their own lens, style, and brushstroke. The tree is the same—but the interpretation is personal.

What Shapes a Medium’s Style?

A medium’s background, training, sensitivity, and natural gifts all play a role in how they work. Some key influences:

  • Life experience: A medium who’s experienced grief might connect deeply with clients in mourning.

  • Spiritual training: Some study at formal institutions like the Arthur Findlay College, while others are self-taught or mentored in indigenous or family traditions.

  • Personality: A naturally visual person may be more clairvoyant. An empath may be deeply clairsentient.

  • Spirit team: Each medium works with different guides and helpers on the other side, and that influences how the energy comes through.

What Stays the Same?

While styles differ, ethical mediums share a few key things in common:

  • A deep respect for spirit and the client.

  • A commitment to truth and integrity.

  • An intention to serve the highest good with compassion.

Whether a medium speaks softly, brings in humor, gives exact names, or focuses on healing emotions—they are all offering a sacred service.

How Do You Know Which Medium Is Right for You?

It’s like finding a good therapist or teacher—it has to feel right. Trust your intuition. Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel safe and understood?

  • Does the medium’s style resonate with me?

  • Am I open to how spirit wants to show up?

No two mediums are the same—but that’s the beauty of it. Spirit finds the best way to reach you through the person who is most aligned to deliver that message.

Final Thoughts

Mediumship isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s a deeply personal, evolving journey—for the medium and the client. Spirit speaks in many languages, and mediums are simply the translators. Each one hears a slightly different dialect, but the love, the healing, and the truth always come through.

So, if you’ve had a reading before and it didn’t quite land, don’t give up. You may just need a different “translator.”

The message is still waiting for you.
